In the real world SMB connections to Windows server suffer horrible performance and permissions issues as the Finder is still looking for stuff that doesnt exist. Creative Cloud, Final Cut et al still work best with AFP servers.

Once you have Extreme Z-IP setup (takes 10 minutes) you need to drop on each Mac as catalogue searching on volumes is different Mac OS revisions. So if you buy a 4 bay unit it automatically provisions as RAID 6 and you cant change it to RAID 10 so I would strongly recommend you use a regular HP box and RAID 10 the storage as the Macs will be generating heavy write tasks so parity RAID is a not a wise move You can run it on Windows Storage Server as well but the main issue there is HP are total bozos when it comes to provisioning these. We use HP DL 380 Gen 8s and have about 20TB storage on each unit This provides a fully functional AFP server on proper Windows architecture and your choice of server hardware. Currently it takes 3 weeks for full backup. I have even created a separate non routable 1 gigabit network segment for Backup traffic which created little improvement. Also backing up from this device to another synology disk station is extremely slow (time backup and replication). All workstations (windows and macs) experience extremely slow searching and propagating folder sizes take hours. They currently have 16TB's of data and have been using a synology diskstation 1813 NAS with Indexing and Apple File Protocol enabled.
They do have a couple of windows workstations also.
I currently have a customer that's a media company which uses Mac's.
